Week 3: Design Lab – Berno from WellmannDesign

If you haven’t had the privilege of playing with a real fleecy soft lamb then Berno Wellmann’s new rocking toy is as close as you will get to a real lamb. Clever Little Monkey is cheering Berno’s new addition to our collection.

Berno is the founder and creative force behind WellmannDesign, a dynamic and diverse product development consultancy. Since its inception in September 2008 WellmannDesign has brought a wealth of products to its clients, taking ideas and developing them into great practical, useful products. The hand-finished Rock-Sheep is the first in the collection. Berno prefers to focus on quality, functional design that will connect with the honest nature of children.

With years of experience in fields ranging from handmade items to injection moulded products WellmannDesign has won various awards and accolades over the years. With a philosophy that design is a language, applied in day to day life, there is still a wide variety of products that will see the light of day from this dynamic young company.

Our 5 minutes with Berno:

What did you want to be when you were a child?
I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps into an engineering direction… and then I discovered that industrial design allows you to be more creative whilst applying engineering principles

What made you decide to start your own business? My first real job after studying was for a lighting manufacturer. This showed me that it is not too difficult to start my own business and bring my own designs to life.

How do you think being creative can bring about change in South Africa? Creativity allows you to see potential. The potential to do things your way, the potential to solve problems through innovation, the potential to affect change. I believe people can really find great solutions to South African problems if we tackle the problems creatively through design thinking.

One piece of advice for young entrepreneurs? Work hard and don’t give up!

What are you up to at the moment? Currently I’m working on some design projects for clients, a transport solution for musicians and of course growing the Rock Sheep family.
