Two years ago we launched the Kids Room Makeover competition. The entries came pouring in, after which 14 finalists were chosen for a kids room makeover. Of those finalists, Melanie Beck was chosen as the lucky winner of a room makeover for her son Daniel. The excitement was mounting to get Daniel into his “big boy room”, as Melanie so adorably puts it. This was two years ago. In that time Melanie and her family have been going through the hustle and bustle of building their beautiful new home on the mountain slopes of Somerset West. We sat down with Melanie to get to know her and her family a little better as we embark on a journey two years in the making.
It’s been two years since you were chosen as the lucky winner of the Kids Room Makeover. Tell us about your journey to today?
Melanie: ‘When I won the Kids Room Makeover competition we had just sold the first house we had built, moved into a rental and were full swing into the planning phase of building our next home. It has been a long two-year process, but the end is finally in sight and we are so excited to be moving into our beautiful new home soon. I can’t wait to sit on my patio with a glass of wine, looking over False Bay, admiring God’s handiwork.’
Tell us a little bit more about your family. What do you and your family like to do for fun?
Melanie: ‘Our little family consists of my husband, Nick, myself and our two children. Jessica (6) is our fiery, determined princess and Daniel (3) is the clown of the family. For fun, we love to spend time with friends and family, eat out, or just chill at home with pizza and a DVD.’
What are your pain points as a Mom?
Melanie: ‘Being a mom to my two gorgeous kids has been the most fulfilling and rewarding experience. I never dreamt what that heart bursting love you have for your own children can feel like. That said, being a mom is hard. What I have found most challenging is the lack of sleep. Trying to be a patient, kind mom after years of disturbed sleep has definitely given me a few extra wrinkles!’
What are some of your favourite quotes?
Melanie: ‘Some of my favourite quotes: I’m so tired, my tired is tired. – Winnie the Pooh; Have courage and be kind. – Cinderella; Pray More, Worry Less – Matthew 6:34. And my favourite… boy (noun): 1. noise with dirt on it!’
“And my favourite… boy (noun):
1. noise with dirt on it!”
What is your favourite style?
Melanie: ‘If I had to describe my style I would say that I love simple, clean, straight lines. I tend to lean towards contemporary, but still, want my home to be inviting and to feel lived in.’
What are your requirements in your kids’ bedroom?
Melanie: ‘For a child’s bedroom I think space to move around is important. They need to feel relaxed to unpack their toys on the floor and immerse themselves in a game. For me, extra sleeping space is a must, as we play musical beds all night long. Organisation and storage are also key so that they are able to develop independence in packing easily.’
