In Good Company: Pedersen + Lennard

We love all our furniture brands, but Pedersen + Lennard holds a special place in our hearts, specifically for the fact that their furniture is designed and manufactured in South Africa. Like many new designer parents, the inspiration behind their children’s line was based on the birth of both of Luke Pedersen’s children.

Duo creatives, Luke Pedersen and James Lennard, describe their design philosophy as follows: “Whether it’s a dining room table or an office desk, we believe design should be accessible, functional and beautiful. It’s why we focus on quality products, innovative design and a simple aesthetic.”

We asked Luke some questions to hear what advice he had to give to young entrepreneurs.

What did you want to be when you were a child?
I’ve always been making and taking things apart, from my earliest memories so I’m sure the progression to what I’m doing now was happening behind the scenes from a very early age.

What made you decide to start your own business?
After studying in Sweden for 2 years, my wife Jenny and I felt the window of opportunity to return to South Africa was going to close unless we took the gap. We came back and after camping out in my brothers loft room we decided something needed to be done. I think that James and I both had a strong feeling that we have something to add to the local design industry and this sense grew until we had the courage to put our work out for sale and get a response – it’s been a fast ride since!

How do you think being creative can bring about change in South Africa?
We have endless opportunities here, design and creativity can be focused on so many different issues that we face. I think creativity is the most powerful medium for bringing change to the foreground of society.

What are you up to at the moment?
We are doing a lot of new design work for our own range which is always exciting and challenging. We seem to be doing a lot of work in offices and retails spaces at the moment which is a nice space to grow and use design as a tool for positive effect in businesses.

One piece of advice for young entrepreneurs.
Get started on your idea straight away and don’t wait for it to be perfect.

How do you define creative success?
When going to the office doesn’t feel like work.
