Do you know what’s in your cot mattress?

The comprehensive guide to cot mattresses in SA

Most parents naturally have a few concerns when it comes to which cot mattress to choose for their precious little newborn to sleep on. Considering that babies generally sleep for about 70 % of the time this is by no means a light hearted decision to take. Investing in a healthy sleep environment is, after all essential to securing a healthy future for your child. That also means a healthier immune system throughout your child’s life and therefore less trips to the doctor.

Here we give you a comparison of the various types of cot mattresses available in SA.

Foam mattresses are widely available and are often considered the default mattress option when it comes to cots. There are two types to choose from.

1. Eazee-breathe Foam Cot Mattress:

The popular Eazee-breathe cot foam mattress is affordable and easily available throughout SA. These mattresses have a cotton mesh cover and approximately 2cm diameter holes cut straight through the foam, allowing baby to be able to breathe easily through their foam mattress. The only thing is, if the cot has a solid base, baby will only really be breathing the chemicals in the foam and will have no access to fresh air that should theoretically be accessible through the holes. There is also no guarantee that any fresh air won’t mix with the foam components.

Technical data:
-foam density: 18 Density
-main ingredients are: TDI and Polyol and Isocyanate with other minor ingredients
-cover: cotton mesh

2. Cot Quilted Mattress:

Cot quilted mattresses are a step up when it comes to longer lasting comfort and spinal support than the Eazee-breathe mattresses. They do not offer any inherent mattress breathability as they are crafted from solid foam with a jacquard quilted cover and ticking. Access to oxygen is therefore gained from above the mattress surface. These mattresses are very similar to the types of mattresses most adults sleep on except that they have no springs or various layers of foam density. These mattresses typically measure ten cm thick and offer better and longer term bodily support for babies and will last well into the toddler years. The cot quilted mattresses are slightly more expensive than the Eazee-breathe mattresses.

-foam density – 18 Density
-main ingredients are: TDI and Polyol and Isocyanate with other minor ingredients
-cover: jacquard quilting

If you are in the market for a truly healthy yet much more expensive type of cot mattress you should consider the mattresses below.

Latex Cot Mattress:

A 100 % natural latex cot mattress is one of the more healthy and highly rated mattresses around for babies. It offers a non-toxic environment which is breathable whilst offering comfortable healthy support. Natural rubber latex foam is produced from the rubber tree (Hevea Brazilensis). The trees are sustainably harvested and grown in plantations throughout Malaysia.

Latex has no fillers or additives. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process unlike the chemicals in foam, memory foam or synthetic latex mattresses. Natural latex is recognised for its ability to provide orthopaedic support. It keeps free of pressure points whilst offering optimal posture and lumbar support which means less tossing and turning at night which in turn allows for a deeper, more restful sleep. Latex is also hypoallergenic, durable and has thermal qualities. It is porous and therefore breathable, keeping the body cool in summer and warm in winter.

The benefit of wool linings on latex mattresses pertains to its ability to regulate body temperature and humidity which means it is also naturally cool in summer and warm in winter. In addition, wool is a naturally antibacterial material. Wool provides excellent insulation and can absorb moisture without feeling damp, as it supports rapid evaporation. These properties make it the perfect material to provide a dry and safe sleep for baby, as it also naturally retards fire.

Technical data:
-medium firm density
-latex core with layers of natural un-dyed wool on each side
-cotton cover and quilted wool/cotton cover on top
