We all know that raising children takes a lot of work, time, patience and money and while we can’t complain about this as we decided to bring them into this world, raising children well will be the hardest job we will ever have to do. Children need supervision, stimulation, love and of course the basics such as food and a place to call home.
As a widowed parent, I am lucky to be able to say that I have so much support. Elijah, very luckily, has three sets of doting grandparents. We have my in-laws, my father and stepmother and my mother and step father luckily, all within a fifteen minute drive from us.
Surround yourself with a group of people you can count on, people you know that will always have the best interests of you and your children at heart.
All three sets of grandparents play a significant role in helping to bring up Elijah whether it’s just fetching and carrying or teaching a valuable life lesson, I know that they will all always have both of our backs.
While not everyone has the luxury of having grandparents living near by or even alive, I then urge you to surround yourself with a group of people you can count on, people you know that will always have the best interests of you and your children at heart. It does, after all, take a village to raise a child.
We treasure every moment spent with the grandparents and Elijah has a special, unique bond with all of them and boy, do they help me out. When life gets crazy and busy or I just need some time-out to process something there is always someone to take Elijah off my hands for a few hours. In actual fact, he has been having regular sleepovers with my in-laws since he was two years old.
That first night that Elijah was away was heartbreaking but so necessary to my mental wellbeing. I closed the door to his bedroom hoping it would make me miss him less but then I actually opened the door again and found myself lying on his bed for a little bit! But when he came back the next day I was all rested and refreshed and ready for some more solo parenting.
Elijah’s grandparents are a Godsend! I think everyday should be grandparents day! Never take them for granted as there will never be anyone who will love your children as much as them, besides you of course.
